Yes, UW Students, you ousted many Republicans, but you will pay for it dearly on your next tuition bill
It just baffles me when I see headlines like this:
Student turnout hike makes difference
and
The Student Voice Dominates Elections in 2006.
UW Students, are you happy you elected people that have no record on the UW System? Let's take a look at all the people that you decided to remove from office:
- 88th Assembly: Judy Krawczyk (R-Green Bay)
- 49th Assembly: Gabe Loeffelholz (R-Platteville)
- 93rd Assembly: Rob Kreibeich (R-Eau Claire, Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee)
- 31st Senate: Ron Brown (R-Chippewa Falls)
- 23rd Senate: Dave Zien (R-Eau Claire)
And let's not forget UW-Oshkosh voting against Julie Pung Leschke (R-Oshkosh).
Republicans were the friends to UW Students, not the Democrats.
- It was the Republicans that pushed for the $500 increase to the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant. (SB 481, 2005 Act 367)
- It was the Republicans, especially Rob Kreibeich as chair of the Assembly higher education committee that made a second student regent happen.(SB 121, 2005 Act 76)
- It was the Republicans that made the new Higher Education Tax Credit. (AB 297
- And for all you brainiacs, the Republicans increased funding for AP, gifted and talented programs to get students on the college track. (2005 Act 15)
What have UW Students gotten from the Democrats?
- How about a 50% increase in tuition over the last four years for in-state residents.
- How about an out-of-control Board of Regents that votes to pad UW executive's pockets instead of putting their budget increases into things students actually use.
- Kevin Barrett. Enough said.
I hope the rest of you students are happy with skyrocketing tuition. Because let's face it, tuition is guaranteed to go up. User fees on campuses will go up to fill the budget gaps. That means more for housing, more for parking permits and more "lab fees." I hope you enjoy your crowded classes, less class offerings and shorter library/computer lab hours.
After all, you students did make a difference on election day...you shot yourself in the foot. Come January 1, you will start to feel the pain.
