Funny how silly students are
So I just picked up a copy of our campus newspaper and I found a letter to the editor titled "Jon Hayden was wrong." I thought to myself, I haven't written anything in that paper since 2004. How could I be wrong?
Turns out, an upset student from UW-Milwaukee didn't like an op-ed that the UWM Post requested from me. It was my letter to UWM students on this students about their student leaders embezzling $10,000 from student organization accounts in an October blog post.
And of course our campus paper runs this, with no background information...
Jon Hayden's letter to the editor was insulting and judgmental. Where does he get off pointing the finger at UWM students when practically all college students (and the general citizenry of the United States) are guilty of his accusations?
Apathy and ignorance run rampant in society at large, not just at UWM. So what if we don't have the greatest voter turn-out on our campus? Is it really that much higher at UW-Green Bay?
No, it isn't. But my point was, we don't have people stealing $10,000 from student org. accounts. And we have procedures that prohibit that and don't stand behind "shared governance" to protect the practice of keeping private checkbooks.
There are a lot of concerned, dedicated and vigilant students at UWM that do care about politics all the time, not just when there is "shady business." If Mr. Hayden wants to piss and moan about corruption, he should take a look at the Bush administration. They probably have more influence on his life than the internal affairs of a college he doesn't even go to.
Actually, I helped elect the Bush Administration. You're going to point your finger at the DoD no-bid contracts, the cronyism and everything else in the Executive Branch. Bush won, get over it. My little sister goes to UWM, so as a big brother, I do care about what they do with her money they waste.
I hope Mr. Hayden sent a copy of his letter to every campus newspaper in the UW System. Hopefully, his holier-than-thou tunnel vision is not so focused on UWM that he cannot see the same problems happening everywhere.
Actually, I didn't send it to anyone. The UWM Post requested it from me. Big difference. I don't know of any other UW four-year campus that allows an open checkbook.
I guess when you view the world from the back of your high horse, Mr. Hayden,
it's easy to condemn others, especially when they're a safe distance from your
back-woods, rural campus in Green Bay.Dinah Edelstein

High horse? They don't go fast enough. I would prefer to ride high in a BMW M5, but that's a few years off. I have been harshly critical of many things here at UW-Green Bay. Remember Leona Cloud Commons? How about the first student senate meeting that was cancelled due to open meetings requirements? A end-of-the-semester round up is in the works. I will go even as far as criticing my own ideas.
The fact of the matter is simple: I call a spade a spade and no one is free from criticism in my eyes. If you do something stupid, you will get called out on it. That is the beauty of the blogosphere. If a newspaper wants to pick up on it and run with it, even better. The new media is a dynamic body that allows for blogs, the Internet and other news sources to influence policy and perspective.
